The Legacy of Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, The Potential of Solicitor General Elena Kagan: Suggested Questions for the Senate Judiciary Committee
The following memorandum outlines major Supreme Court cases decided during Justice Stevens' tenure and uses this history to suggest questions the Senate Judiciary Committee should ask Elena Kagan to help ascertain her commitment to upholding and advancing women's fundamental human rights.

NOW Foundation Opposes Phony Parental Alienation Disorder
Over the years, hundreds of women have contacted National Organization for Women chapters looking for assistance in their efforts to protect minor children in family court custody proceedings. Often these women have been accused of a phony psychiatric condition, termed Parental Alienation Disorder (PAD). The "disorder" has been proposed by so-called father's rights (men's custody) activists to be added to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostics and Statistics Manual - V to give it more legitimacy than it currently has -- or should have -- in court.

NOW Foundation Urges Closer Examination of Violence Against Women

It's been 16 years since the passage of the Violence Against Women Act and more than a decade since a U.N. Special Rapporteur examined violence against women in the United States. This year, the National Organization for Women urges that the U.S. invite the current Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Rashida Manjoo, to prepare a report on VAW. To assist Ms. Manjoo in selecting a focus for her study, NOW Foundation met with the Special Rapporteur at a Roundtable on Violence Against Women sponsored by the University of Virginia School of Law Human Rights Program in early February and provided her with our recommendations. With the hardships of the economic recession contributing to a tragic increase in violent acts and many states slashing funds for shelters and programs, the time seems especially appropriate for a fresh look at how well or not-so-well we are doing to reduce violence against women.

Don't Be Deceived: Only a "Clean" CEDAW Should be Ratified
U.S. is one of very few countries -- and the only democracy -- that has not ratified CEDAW, the "women's treaty," since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. NOW supports ratification of CEDAW, but we are also very much aware of the 11 limitations that have been attached to the treaty by prior administrations and conservative senators -- limitations that would undermine key provisions. Continued Threats to Afghan Women Require Support in U.S. and Worldwide
Amidst deadly bombings, rocket attacks and threats of violence against voters, Afghanistan's national elections took place on Aug. 20. While hazardous conditions likely suppressed at least part of the women's vote, the good news is that two women ran for president, five sought the vice presidency, and some 300 women ran for election to provincial councils. Results of the election are expected to be announced this week. Women's presence is a hopeful sign that a stronger democracy can emerge from this war-torn country; but at the same time, there is plenty of evidence that women in general are not gaining ground.
